And another round for the bureaucrats

Article Abstract:

The UK Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is investigating prices charged to tenants by the brewing industry. Tenants pay more for beer than free market clients. Tied tenants have complained of higher prices and the European Commision has asked the OFT to carry out an investigation. Tenants obtain benefits such as training and lower rents, and brewers argue that they thus have a right to charge higher prices. The brewing industry is affected by a fall in consumption and overcapacity, and an adverse decision could hit beer producers.

The OFT may decide that brewers should reduce rent levels oroffer lower prices to tenants.

Merger wave set to break: this week's benign Office of Fair Trading report doesn't change the reality of very tough times for brewers

Article Abstract:

The brewing industry may undergo a period of major restructuring and further alliances may be prompted with the expected merger of Scottish & Newcastle and Courage. The industry now has two years before its next regulatory review and Bass has stated that its own plans depend on the regulator's decision about S&N's plans. Other brewers have been affected by falling beer consumption and cross Channel imports.
