Life for investors would be simpler if there were laws to predict performance of investments. Stock selection should be guided by the idea of Margin of Safety, according to investment adviser, Benjamin Graham, but he did not explain how to calculate this margin. One method of selecting stocks is called 'Dogs of the Dow', and involves buying 10 stocks with the highest yields of the blue chip stocks from the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and exchanging them for the 10 stocks with highest yields after a year. This method has not been successful during the late 1990s, though a similar method can be refined and has produced a better performance with British stocks.

There has been an increase in numbers of investors as a result of a boom in technology stocks, and this increase is likely to persist, even if the fashion becomes less important. Investors should make their stock selection taking into account the funds they have available to invest. Investors with smaller sums have to make more difficult decisions with regard to the amount of risk that they want to take on, while those with larger sums can balance high-risk and safer stocks. Costs are also important, and investment savings schemes or unit trusts may be appropriate for people with very small sums.
