Any port in a storm

Article Abstract:

Guaranteed investment products are being marketed to UK investors at a time when share prices are highand there is concern that they could fall. These products initially appear attractive but they have their drawbacks. A drop in share prices may mean that investors do not get any return on capital, and there could be risks from investments in derivatives made by funds. Returns tend to ignore the impact of income and the performance targets of these funds tend not to be demanding. There may also be penalties imposed if investors cash funds in early.

Saving schemes offer chance of a smoother ride

Article Abstract:

UK savings schemes were developed by investment trusts seeking to attract private investors. Foreign and Colonial Investment Trust was a pioneer in this field in 1984. There are over 50 management groups offering these schemes in 1996, and 92,000 savers are involved with a total of 1.22 billion pounds sterling invested. The schemes offer flexibility since the amount saved can be varied each month. Investment trust share prices have increased as a result of these schemes.

Challenges of a weak market

Article Abstract:

UK investment trust discounts have widened and there are rumors of takeovers. Liquidations, reorganizations and mergers have occurred as the management houses have sought to avoid bids. There has been little opportunity for new issues due to widening discounts. Houses have sought to offer attractive personal equity plan (Pep) and savings schemes to tempt private investors. Rationalization can take a number of forms such as when successful trusts absorb weak trusts.
