April was favourable for the domestic building industry again

Article Abstract:

Czech Republic: According to economists, the volume of construction production should increase by 9.0-9.7% in 2001. The total construction production grew by more than 16% in constant prices in Apr 2001 compared to Apr 2000. The quick development of civil engineering in 2001 is ensured mainly by foreign investors and the public sector, which is trying to allure foreign investments by the setting up of infrastructure. Apartment construction has started to get out of damping. The productivity of labour in the building industry increased by 15.8% for Jan-Apr 2001 compared to the same period in 2000. The average nominal wage was CEK 13,935 in the building sector.

The Czechs have a dominant position in saving in building societies

Article Abstract:

Czech Republic: The number of new contracts on saving in building societies increased by 1.2 mil in 2000. Their total number is 3.7 mil. Building societies have a total of 110 bil of deposits on their accounts. They have granted a total of 408,000 credits from the deposits, which represents loans of CEK 62 bil for the last six years. The Ministry of Finances estimates that it has to pay state contributions of nearly CEK 9 bil for building savings in 2001.
