Archives: the Lockheed Constellation

Article Abstract:

The Lockheed Constellation is still remembered today as the most elegant airliner during its time. The Constellation made its maiden flight 50 years ago and its first non-stop commercial flight across the US in 1946. It was the first airliner that provided modern comforts for its passengers. Its pressurized fuselage enabled it to fly at 20,000 ft. Aircraft designer Kelly Johnson based the Constellation's design concept on the twin-boomed P-38 fighter. Raymond Loewy and Henry Dreyfuss designed the interiors. The plane was used extensively until jets were introduced in 1957.

Learning from the birds and the bees

Article Abstract:

Paul MacCready's firm called AeroVironment has the goal of developing a new kind of high-tech micro aerial vehicles (MAVs). The company has developed tiny ornithopters which are powered by rubber bands and simulate the flapping of the wings of birds to be able to fly for several minutes. Using such models, the Monrovia, CA-based company hopes to come up with MAVs which have a wide range of military and civilian applications.
