Asbestos claims cling to T and N

Article Abstract:

T and N could see an increase in claims related to asbestos and this fear has led to a drop in the company's share price. A claim from Chase Manhattan is due to be heard and relates to the Chase Plaza, built in 1959. Other claims could follow including a claim from the New York Ports Authority for $500 million. T and N argues that its defense against Chase Manhattan is strong and that it has small exposure to other asbestos claims. The Chase case will be heard in New York in Oct 1995.

There are a number of medium and small engineering firms in Manchester, England, and some of these have been affected by the strength of pound sterling and high levels of interest rates. Investment has fallen and confidence has dropped. Companies with foreign parents are vulnerable. Dresser Industries owns Dresser-Rand UK, which is to shift production to the US and France, according to an insider. Some sectors are performing well, and they include automotive companies.
