Ashtead saw a drop in plant hire rates of between 5% and 10% in the 1995 to 1996 financial year, and conditions are still difficult in Aug 1996. The company has increased its share of the UK market to 12% with a rise in UK sales of 30% and a rise in operating profit of 26% at 14.1 million pounds sterling. The company is also performing well in the US and foresees half its profits likely to be derived from US activities by 2000. The company's profit is forecast at 29 million pounds sterling for 1997 by UBS.
