Australian Chief of Navy

Article Abstract:

Australia's new Chief of Navy, Vide Admiral D.J. Shackleton, said the Australian Defense Force is interested in the Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle program. The navy is also looking into enhancing the warfighting capabilities of the new ANZAC frigates. Possible enhancements include the Enhanced Sea Sparrow and the SH-2G Seasprite helicopter. In regard to the ex-US Navy Newport (LST-1179)-class LPAs Kanimbla and Manoora, Shackleton said it has taken longer than expected for the ships to come on line.

The Royal Australian Navy: on course for the 21st century

Article Abstract:

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) played a key role during the peacekeeping operations in East Timor. The RAN has seen its resources stretched thinly due to various other demands including illegal drug activity, immigration and commercial fishing. Its primary goal is to maintain an assured capability to detect and attack any major surface ships and prevent hostile submarine operations in Australia's extended maritime borders. The navy will continue to develop its capabilities to accomplish its mission.
