BTP

Article Abstract:

BTP is a United Kingdom producer of fine chemicals which has seen its stock price fall, despite producing ingredients for Viagra, an anti-impotence tretment from Pfizer which has seen its stock price rise. Specialty chemicals involve a high value-added component and this leads to larger profit margins which are also more stable than those of other drugs. BTP ranks first in the production of personal-care biocides world wide. The company is likely to sell its safety equipment division which could bring in between 80 million pounds sterling and 100 million pounds.

Allied Colloids bets the company

Article Abstract:

Allied Colloids is acquiring CPS, the company's supplier of polymer intermediates. Colloids accounts for 14% of CPS' business. CPS reported a gross profit of $35.5 million with sales of $157 million for 1995. CPS lost 9% of usual sales in 1996 due to two clients building plants to supply themselves with polymer intermediates. Colloids' operating margin was 25% in the UK but only 4.4% in the US and this investment is in the US. The company faces increased competition as is shown by pressure on pre-tax margins.
