Back in the black

Article Abstract:

Canada's forest products industry suffered its worst losses ever from 1990 to 1993 due to the combination of economic recession, countervailing duties imposed by the US on softwood lumber and badly timed environmental laws which required the installation of wastewater facilities worth millions of dollars. The pulp and paper sector lost $5 billion while the lumber sector lost $1.5 billion during the three-year period. However, the 90% rise in pulp prices in early 1995 may signal the beginning of recovery for the forest products industry.

Green spending in black and white

Article Abstract:

A statement of environmental expenditures has enabled BC Hydro to establish a comprehensive environmental financial information and control system. The idea for a statement of environmental expenditures was developed for better monitoring of expenses on the environment. The statement did not only control spending but also encouraged project officials to be more accountable. It has also led to quick identification of the sources of delays and inefficiencies.

Paper profits...

Article Abstract:

Prospects for the paper/forest products sector stocks seem bright despite weak product prices. Firmer prices are expected in the future as deferral of industry capacity expansion plans follows an increase in speculation. Price firming will also be propelled by an increase in demand as a result of improving worldwide economies. Analysts believe that only a global recession could derail hopes of bullish growth for the paper/forest products stocks.
