Basic space science and developing countries

Article Abstract:

Developing countries have long realized that promoting basic science proficiency can stimulate economic development. However, scientists from developing countries often find it difficult to keep in pace with the latest developments in the international scientific community because of their limited access to information. To address this limitation, developing countries should strive to seek cooperation with their developed neighbors, both in the international and regional levels. A discussion of some of the UN's efforts to promote cooperation in science development is presented.

Remote sensing of Earth resources: emerging opportunities for developing countries

Article Abstract:

A number of socio-political and technological developments provide opportunities for developing countries to enhance their participation in remote sensing projects. These include satellite earth-observation missions and global environmental initiatives for research and monitoring. Other channels will be tackled during the third UN UNISPACE conference in Vienna in 1999. To optimize the benefits from these opportunities, national governments should make sure that the local promotion of satellite remote sensing is prioritized.

Novel approaches on cooperation by developing countries in space

Article Abstract:

The main obstacle facing space organizations in developing countries is how to get the attention and necessary funding from policy makers. This is because policy makers of developing countries have to weigh the costs of space programs against higher priority options such as health services and infrastructure. Thus, the space community in developing countries should present more cost-efficient space programs and their potential benefits to policy makers.
