Bass to turn to betting

Bass is likely to seek to acquire a betting company after its bid for Carlsberg-Tetley failed to be granted approval from the United Kingdom trade secretary. William Hill is a possible betting acquisition, and Meridien Hotels is another possible target. Bass owns 850 Coral betting outlets while William Hill has 1,550 outlets, giving a combined total accounting for 35% of the UK market. There could also be competition problems if this bid were to be attempted.

Heineken: brewing up

Heineken has acquired Birra Moretti, a brewer which ranks third in the Italian market. Heineken faces a contracting market in Europe, and economies of scale can be achieved through acquisitions in this context. Heineken holds a stake of over 40% in the Italian market following this acquisition, and has already acquired Italian interests from Interbrew. The company has carried out acquisitions in France and these have to be approved by the authorities.
