Baxter Healthcare uses its own quality award to help achieve excellence

Article Abstract:

Baxter Healthcare Corp responded to the challenge presented by the rising costs of health care and the need to stay competitive by turning to quality leadership. The Baxter Quality Award (BQA) was developed following the criteria set by the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award and was designed on a plan-do-check-adjust cycle to evaluate a company's quality performance and encourage continuous improvement. The categories available under BQA are the Manufacturing Division, Manufacturing Plant, Service Division, Service Organization and Corporate Staff Group.

Janssen Pharmaceutica: focusing through competitive analysis

Article Abstract:

Competitive benchmarking helped Janssen Pharmaceutica prioritize improvement efforts in administrative overhead management. Participation in a benchmark study was an attempt at developing a program for continuous improvement but the studies provided little guidance on how improvement programs could be implemented. Janssen management thus sponsored a forum in pursuit of the best benchmarking study to use as a basis for corporate management improvement.

A prescription for enhancing productivity at Bristol-Myers Squibb

Article Abstract:

Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. stands to reap cost savings of $1.1 to $1.5 billion by Dec. 1998 from its company-wide Productivity for Growth Initiative. The program is tied up with the company's Internal Growth Initiative, a $117-million venture capital fund for reinvesting savings into business projects. To date, the Productivity for Growth program encompasses the company's shared services, segment selling, purchasing and real estate divisions.
