Beating the pack

Article Abstract:

Many investors have moved to index trackers, which offer a cheap way of achieving good retunrs, but this may not hold for the long term. Active funds have tended to underperform, and impose higher charges, but their performance in Europe has been better than in the US or United States. This is mainly because the European market is less mature, so research can bring advantages. Advantages for active managers are disappearing as European markets increase their efficiency. Other markets where active managers can outperform include Japan.

Shop for pensions the easy way

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom unit and investment trust pensions offer flexibility in terms of contributions and transparent charges. They tend not to offer additional life cover and other benefits which conventional plans can offer, and should be used with conventional plans. Charges tend to involve a policy fee, a management fee and there may be commission payments which are given to financial advisers. Some of these products offer peripheral benefits such as income drawdown options.

A risky business

Article Abstract:

Risks vary according to investors' circumstances. relative performance is important for pension fund trustees and the need for income and for preservation of capital is important for retired investors. Timing is also important in assessing risks. Stocks have tended to perform well over the longer term but their performance depends on when they are purchased. Investors can obtain risk data which they should interpret to fit their specific circumstances.
