Big Labor rips Nike at Big PR's annual outing

Article Abstract:

Nike will not abide by its promise to enforce US labor standards at its overseas subcontractors, said ALF-CIO President John Sweeney at the 47th annual PR Seminar in Pebble Beach, CA, on May 22, 1998. Sweeney was referring to Nike CEO Phil Knight's announcement promising to improve the company's human rights record. Sweeney described Knight's announcement as a "cheap PR stunt" because it is voluntary. He added that the giant shoe manufacturer did not follow its previous "Code of Conduct" and there is no reason it will do so now.
