CA to the stars

Article Abstract:

Chartered accountant Hank Kates is a favorite of celebrities. Past clients have included such stars as Mickey Rooney, Mel Torme and Chistopher Plummer. Presently, he provides accounting services to Helen Shaver, Joe Flaherty and Andrea Martin. Kates got his first job in the entertainment world when he was hired by Toronto theatre magnate Ed Mirvish in 1963. He says he enjoys his status as an accountant for the stars because they always invite him to galas and opening nights.

Smooth moves: how CAs can tackle the challenges they face when shifting to industry

Article Abstract:

The growing number of chartered accountants who have moved from public practice to the industry has grown due to decreasing partnership opportunities. The industry demands much more from its financial officers than simple functions of cost controls. Many chief financial officers who have moved from public practice to industry practice found that the key to survival is in extending their capabilities in management, especially in business advocacy and personnel management.

The price is right

Article Abstract:

The buying and selling of a business can be a very risky transaction. Financing is the foremost consideration for both buyers and sellers. Selling or buying an account of a block of accounts is an alternative to minimize these risks. It is a low-risk method which lessens the required downpayment. It allows accountants to work part-time and gradually work their way into becoming full-time practitioners.
