CKD Vagonka to begin making railway coaches at Vitkovice

Article Abstract:

CKD Vagonka (CKDV) (Studenka, Czech Republic), railway coach manufacturer, will begin manufacturing coaches on the premises of Vitkovice (Ostrava, Czech Republic) from the middle of Mar 2001. CKDV moved the manufacturing to the reconstructed halls of Vitkovice after its wagon production was taken over by the world's second largest wagon manufacturer Thrall Car in 2000. The costs on moving totalled several dozens of millions of Czech crowns. Roughly 300 employees will work at the reconstructed halls. The construction of accessory plants including a paint shop and a test room should be started at the turn of Apr and May 2001. The parent firm CKD Praha Holding (Prague, Czech Republic) wants to sell CKDV to a strategical partner within 3-4 years. The contingent investor is Fiat Ferroviaria (Italy), a railway division of the concern Fiat, which has a contract on mutual co-operation in coach production with CKDV.

Hop producer expects a better season in 2001 than in 2000

Article Abstract:

Czech Republic: A total of 5,000 t of hops were harvested in 2000, which was the lowest quantity from the second world war. The record low crop was caused mainly by the dry and warm weather in May and Jun 2000 and by the ageing of hop gardens. Traders contracted the purchase of 6,000 t of hops in 2001. The yields of hops should increase by 26% in 2001 compared to 2000. Hop gardens are implementing new varieties of hops with a high yield potential and are building irrigation systems. About 80% of the total hop production are exported, mainly to Japan.
