The company has been affected by instability in far east Asian markets, but Cable and Wireless has a strong position in Hong Kong and could be a desirable partner or bid target. The major telecoms companies tend to lack a strong presence in Asian markets which is where Cable and Wireless has strength. The company's profit is forecast at 1.5 billion pounds sterling for 1998 and 1.7 billion pounds for the following year by Merrill Lynch.
