Call for self-restraint in Welsh budget round

Article Abstract:

Sec of State David Hunt has warned Welsh councils to practice self-restraint in their budget implementation, as the fiscal budget program for 1992-93 is released. The program provides for total standard spending amounting to 2,604.4 million pound sterling. It includes a community charges reduction scheme which stands to benefit about 56% of charge payers from 500 community council areas. Revenue grants are also allotted in preparation for the council tax in Apr 1993. The Council of Welsh Districts, however, was dissatisfied with Hunt's financial policies. It criticized the standard spending assessments as inaccurate and the grant system as inconsistent.

'Long term savings' from new Welsh structure

Article Abstract:

The British local government in Wales plans a restructuring that will lead to long term savings. Plans are afoot for the conversion of eight counties and 37 districts to 23 unitary authorities. The proponent, Secretary of State David Hunt, predicts that his plans will likely be implemented in 1995. The proposed 23 new authorities are based on current district blocks and aim to bring back full authority to certain population centers, restore traditional counties in the countryside and respect local loyalties.

Hunt sets up capping hit squad

Article Abstract:

UK Secretary of State David Hunt has imposed a budget limit on Welsh county councils. He told Parliament that any budget which exceeded government standards would be investigated. This could affect four of the eight Welsh counties specifically, Clwyd, Dyfed, Mid Glamorgan and West Glamorgan. The Assembly of Welsh Counties has complained to the Welsh Office that the budget cuts would preclude school building improvements.
