Can life be the same after birth?

Article Abstract:

Childcare facilities in the UK are extremely limited, making it difficult for career women in the accounting field and other professions to balance having a child and a career. This situation necessitates innovative career alternatives because demographic trends indicate that women, who made up 34.8% of the people entering the accounting profession in 1988, will be a more important component of the work force in the immediate future. Among the professions, there is an increasing perception of the value of women employees and the need to retain them through flexible personnel policies. One major incentive to keep women in the workforce is career break schemes. Other flexible personnel policies include part-time work, job-sharing, and night-shift working.

Mixing business with pleasure

Article Abstract:

Hundreds of companies in the UK offer corporate entertainment packages and a minimum of 150 companies offer corporate hospitality packages. The corporate entertainment business in the UK does an estimated 500 million pounds sterling worth of business annually. Page & Moy Deputy Managing Dir John Fisher states that the major markets for corporate entertainment packages are the automobile, computer, and insurance industries, and notes that accounting firms are not major customers. Clark Whitehill marketing executive Nicky Methven believes that accounting firms can benefit from the services of corporate entertainment companies for they provide an informal setting that bolsters business relationships between a firm and its clients.

Business accountants are team players

Article Abstract:

The traditional perception of accountants as narrow specialists who concentrate solely 'keeping he books' is changing. The executives of more progressive companies are making accountants an integral part of business teams that consist of marketing, research, production, and distribution managers. One consequence of this trend is that accountants are expected to know more about the roles of other departments in their organizations, so that accountants can provide better support for those departments, and develop an intuitive sense about the business.
