Chemistry goes missing as failed deal blurs simple vision: ICI, once the bellwether of UK industry, has suffered yet another setback in its attempt to reinvent itself

Article Abstract:

ICI's planned deal to sell its Tioxide business has recently collapsed due to Dupont and NL Industries decision to withdraw. This may have been prompted by the Federal Trade Commission's demands for unacceptable concessions. Dupont has also withdrawn from discussions on a related joint venture with ICI Pakistan. ICI has been attempting to transform itself into a focused speciality chemicals business, but it is trying to cope with a huge 4.4 billion pounds sterling debt burden, mainly the result of the high cost of the Unilever acquisitions. However the company believes it has enough financial leeway to continue with its transformation plans.
