Chill in lending bigger than Y2K fears

Article Abstract:

Uncertain bank lending activities are sending alarm signals to businesses, much more than fears related to the year 2000 date conversion crisis. Banks have discouraged California Portland Cement from extending its loans and from acquiring new capital. Similarly, stringent bank requirements are threatening US Sugar's expansion programs. In addition, low interest rates may jeopardize the financial programs of Synopsys for 1999. The firms believe that their income in 1999 would depend on banks' lending programs and the availability of other capital sources.

Article Abstract:

Treasurers are facing many local and global issues in the performance of their risk management duties. These concerns were raised in a poll organized by 'Treasury and Risk Management' magazine with several US treasurers.
