Chunnel may transform Kent's fortunes

Article Abstract:

The Channel Tunnel has increased the importance of Kent county, England, as an industrial location. Kent was previously seen as a backwater and has become a gateway for mainland Europe. The northern part of Kent is also close to the M25 route. Companies which have moved to Ashford, Kent, include Rimmel, a cosmetics concern, Inka Holdings, a software house, and Brake Brothers, a food company. The UK is not bounded by the European Union Social Chapter, so presents an opportunity for competitive manufacturing.

Room for a little one

Article Abstract:

The business relocation needs of small firms in the UK have frequently been ignored by UK developers, which tend to seek large tenants. Some business parks have been developed with space for small business, and local chambers of commerce and local government have sought to aid this sector by encouraging small business units. Business center accommodation is offered by some companies such as Absolutely Offices, but many real estate companies do not foresee major growth for the business center market.

All change at the top

Article Abstract:

The UK government has sought to attract inward investment, but the possibility of a new government does not appear to concern the relocation industry. The UK grants system is unlikely to undergo major changes if the Labor Party wins an election. Shorter leases are being encouraged by the government, and JVs between the public and private sectors are likely whatever party is in power. Labor supports the European Social Chapter, and this could lead to less inward investment.
