Citicorp-Travelers merger - from sure thing to shaky

Article Abstract:

Jamie Dimon has resigned from Citicorp-Travelers, leaving questions about the succession, since he was expected to take over from Sandy Weill. Dimon had been appointed to share the management of Salomon Smith Barney, and the bank has suffered trading losses. Dimon was the boss of the daughter of his boss after the merger, and decided not to promote her, which could have led to a cooler relationship with his boss. Weill is joint head with John Reed from Citicorp, but Weill appears to wield more power, which makes the succession issue more urgent.

A banking revolution

Article Abstract:

Telephone banking has developed rapidly in the UK and looks set to grow further. There are also developments in computer and television banking. Barclays is piloting a scheme using personal computers, while NatWest is piloting interactive television banking. Costs are linked to the cost of phone calls, though local rates are charged. Security is a bigger concern, and personal identification numbers, or passwords are used. Home banking can be used to complement existing services, rather than a replacement.
