Rebuilding the city centre

Article Abstract:

Parts of the city center of Manchester, England, were damaged by a bomb blast in Jun 1996. Estimates of the damage caused range from 500 million pounds sterling to 70 million pounds. The bomb affected 670 businesses with 245 of these affected over the long term. Funds are available from central government and the damage offers an opportunity for redeveloping the center of Manchester. This should help offset the threat from a competing out of town center, the Trafford Centre. The Arndale Centre will remain, but can be changed.

Commonwealth bid leaves city on tenterhooks

Article Abstract:

Manchester, England, is seeking to host the Commonwealth Games in 2002, and would gain a number of economic benefits as well as prestige from being chosen to do so. Manchester has seen a decline in the proportion of its population employed in manufacturing so is more vulnerable to recession in the service sctor. Manchester has not had a strong record for attracting inward investment and this is cause for concern when local companies are not investing a great deal.
