Clients blamed over self-assessment delays

Article Abstract:

Clients as well as Revenue & Customs came under attack from tax advisers in equal measure as the deadline for self assessment, January 31 2006 has approached, and apparently, clients are not bothered about paying a fine of pounds sterling 100. The Revenue takes months to process accounts and hence clients might be confused about the amount they owe and might also incur interest penalties for non-payment, as a result of which, tax advisers blame clients more than the Revenue that they do not pass on the data to complete the tax return.

Repatriating the family silver

Article Abstract:

An American newspaper estimated that the money held in the individual accounts in offshore financial centers in 2003 is $12 billion. The announcement of the amnesty provision by the exchange control regulation provided an opportunity for offshore accounts users to come clean and declare their external investments, thereby avoiding any future risk of incurring liability for previous contraventions of exchange controls or failure to declare income for tax purposes.

Summertime blues

Article Abstract:

The proposed move to bring the deadline of filing tax returns forward has not gone down well with accountants and tax practitioners as the major burden of tax return completion will fall across the summer holidays. They feel that bringing the self-assessment deadline forward would drive up fees for clients and lead to staffing nightmares and job losses.
