Come in Sid, your time is up

Article Abstract:

Investing in new share issues has become popular in the UK. Offers for sale provide easy access to private investors. Offers for subscription are similar, but the issue may be cancelled if not enough investors are interested. Tender offers involve bids being made by investors, while private investors are usually excluded from share placings. Introductions do not involve new investors and occur when companies seek a stock market listing, and already havemany shareholders.

Pegging your fortunes to a formula

Article Abstract:

Price-earnings growth (PEG) is a way to assess shares and the relationship of the price earnings ration of a company to its rate of growth. Shares with PEGs of under 1.5 are more attractive than those with PEGs over 1.5. Shares with low PEGs tend to perform better than the market as a whole. This can be seen by examining PEGs for shares over six month periods during 1995 using like for like comparisons. Undervalued growth shares can thus be identified by UK investors.

Proof that the peg fits

Article Abstract:

Jim O'Shaughnessy has set out criteria for identifying shares likely to perform well. His criteria were established after analyzing share data going back 43 years. Shares that have performed well tend to have strong asset values and cash flows and high levels of sales compared to market capitalization. Other factors could be added to O'Shaughnessy's list, such as using the consensus forecasts of brokers, and accelerating earnings.
