Comparing speech versus text displays for alarm handling

Article Abstract:

Researchers compared the effectiveness of speech-based and text-based alarm signals in computer control systems. They set up a test in which participants monitored an industrial process under differing experimental conditions. The participants took longer to respond to speech-indicated faults than to text-based alarms, but the appropriateness of the responsive actions was similar under both conditions. Participants waiting until the end of a spoken message accounts for some, but not all, of the response delay. The results have implications for alarm system design.

Vehicle automation and driving performance

Article Abstract:

Advance vehicle systems equipped with automated driver functions such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Active Steering (AS) are expected to be introduced by the end of the 20th century. Despite the advantages that vehicle automation technology provide including increased ease in driving and reduction of road accidents, there is growing concern for its reliability. This is especially true with its operational application, as manufacturers have limited themselves to testing automated cars using model drivers.

Distribution situation awareness in dynamic systems: Theoretical development and application of an ergonomics methodology

Article Abstract:

A description of distributed situation awareness (DSA) that is system oriented, rather than individual oriented is presented in order to develop measures of DSA that can support prediction of performance and inform the interpretation of observations made in the field. The situation awareness is marked as a dynamic and collaborative process binding agents together on tasks on a moment-by-moment basis.
