Conversation pieces to provoke

Article Abstract:

Veteran woodworker Ed Zucca combines his cabinetmaking skills and metaphoric flair to create satirical furniture. Political, cultural and environmental double entendres dominate his works so much so that functionality is replaced by metaphor. His eccentric designs allow him the freedom to distort and animate his forms with the least amount of conformity. Zucca's penchant for complex and intricate designs, however, seems to work against him. His woodworking experience of more than 20 years has produced virtually all but simple designs. Despite this, his unique and novel approach sets his works apart from the ostentatious furniture designs of the present.

Loewy's icon on streamlined designed

Article Abstract:

The pencil sharpener designed by Raymond Loewy in 1932 has become a famous symbol of the streamlining movement of its period, despite its failure to sell during its initial release. Thus, a brief history of streamlining design is presented, from its early rejection by purists to its peak of popularity in the 1930's. There is also the possibility of a comeback of the pencil sharpener in the marketplace, given its pleasing aesthetics and its contrast with contemporary everyday objects.

Archives: Wirkkala's mass-produced ice sculpture

Article Abstract:

Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala's design for Finlandia vodka bottles, created for the Finnish National Distillery, in 1968, was inspired by melting ice. Because it conveys the concept of cleanliness and chilliness so clearly, the design has been retained for the past 24 years despite the Distillery's occasional reviews of the bottle design. Wirkkala, who trained as a sculptor, was inspired by the Bauhaus ideal to create affordable and beautiful mass-produced goods.
