Insiders at Copley Pharmaceutical Inc. are increasing the holdings of the drug company's stock despite the firm's legal problems. Copley stock has fallen from $53 at the end of 1993 to $15 in early 1995 due to a grand jury case involving some of the firm's products. This has resulted in neutral ratings for its shares, despite new product approvals from the FDA. Nevertheless, purchases at the $14-$15 level by Chmn. Jane Hirsch and Pres. Kenneth Larsen suggest that Copley is less troubled than it seems.

Liposome Technology inc makes injectable pharmaceutical preparations. Its share price has not approximated its 1992 highs in the $26 level. Insider David Blech cleared out some shares as the stock declined in 1992. Share price settled at the $10 level after Blech disclosed that he will refrain from any other selling until Jan 1994. Three insiders, however, cleared out 45,000 shares in late Nov 1992 at the $11 area. Pres Michael Ullman sold 10,000 shares at $11.39 for the 1st time.

Schering-Plough Corp is a maker of prescription and non-prescription drugs, animal health care products and skin care products. Two insiders cleared out 10,939 shares at prices between $60.63 and $57 last Feb 1993. The selling occurred immediately after Pres Bill Clinton released his health care plan. The incidence of insider distribution when the opposite is expected deserves careful consideration so caution is recommended for the issue.
