Corporate political strategies and firm performance: indications of firm-specific benefits from personal service in the U.S. government

Article Abstract:

A study of the relationship between corporate political strategies and firm performance examined how personal service in public office results in firm-specific benefits. This investigation focused on two forms of personal service, namely, federal cabinet-level appointments, and election to the US House of Representatives and Senate. These public officials were either senior corporate managers or board members of publicly traded companies. Analysis of data using event-study methodology revealed that government service has a positive influence on firm value, suggesting that political strategies may result in firm-specific benefits. Explanations for this relationship were found from extant literature.
