Costar Stingray

Article Abstract:

Costar Corp's Stingray, an improvement on the trackball accessory device for computer keyboards, won a gold award in the consumer products category of the 1992 I.D. Annual Design Review. The designers of the Stingray reduced the size of the ball from about 55 mm to only 34 mm, thus reducing the amount of wrist strain associated with standard trackballs. The Stingray also features low-profile buttons to permit a more relaxed position for the hand. The design was made by Paul Bradley of IDEO Product Development, Palo Alto, CA, in cooperation with the In-house Design of Costar Corp.

UK: HIGHER COSTS FOR PET BOTTLES A CONCERN

Article Abstract:

The increasing cost involved in the production of PET bottles looks as if it might cause a rift between major supermarket chains and suppliers. The cost of raw materials for PET containers has risen by 20% since the start of 1999 and packaging costs are reputed to account for nearly half the retail price of a tertiary bottle of lemonade. Major retailers say that the public expects competitive prices at Christmas and that this wasn't a good time for manufacturers to press for price increases.

Streamlined screens

Article Abstract:

Previous liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors cost $5,000 apiece and were used by high-end industrial users who could afford their cost. A new generation of LCD desktop computer monitors promises to give users even more elbow room while selling at more affordable prices. LCDs are better than cathode ray tube monitors because they are lighter in weight, have zero emissions, contain a smaller footprint and feature flicker-free images among other advantages.
