Crash course

Article Abstract:

Share prices fell dramatically in Oct 1987, reaching a low point on Nov 30 1987, yet they had recovered to peak 1987 levels by the middle of 1988. The drop in prices was initially seen as a bear market and later described as a correction. A shift is confidence appears to have caused the crash though there were a number of other factors such as the US trade deficit. Private investors tended to retain their holdings and did not suffer unduly. They are able to take a longer term view than institutions and this should help private investors if another crash occurs.

A due correction

Article Abstract:

World stock prices have been in line for a correction, according to Goldman Sachs. There is a drop in spare capacity, bond yields are likely to rise and the value of the US dollar is likely to drop. Stock prices and the US dollar could rise prior to a fall, but a fall is likely. The market appears to be overvalued and in the case of mainland Europe this could be an overvaluation of from 15% to 20%. The end of the bull market could be triggered by a rise in interest rates or inflation rather than by excessive valuations.
