Creating value through mutual commitment to business network relationships

Article Abstract:

A study of interdependence in ongoing business relationships highlights the influence of the surrounding business network and the relationship between the exchange partners on the interdependence of the partners. It also aims to find out if this interdependence affects the creation of value in the business relationship. A causal chain from business network connection through mutual commitment to mutual dependence and relationship value creation was developed to illustrate the associations and tested in a structural model. Analysis showed that mutuality in business network relationships is important in cultivating interfirm systems of workflow interdependence that facilitate value creation. The implications of this study are discussed.
