Article Abstract:

A company that recklessly adopts an all-encompassing management theory as a cure-all for its organizational problems runs the risk of setting itself up for almost inevitable failure. One reason for this is that management fads such as re-engineering and quality improvement, which are best applied only in certain circumstances, tend to be adopted across the board even in areas and situations where they are not really needed. As a result, the change process that comes with their implementation tends to result in the creation of an overly bureaucratic system rather than the highly productive entity originally envisioned. Furthermore, since the implementation of these management theories is usually accompanied with much managerial fanfare, their failure to create meaningful change tends to alienate employees, who are unlikely to provide their support again for future management initiatives that may be needed to alter organizational behavior.
