Defense money bills in last-minute time crunch

Article Abstract:

The lawmakers are speeding to gain the final approval of legislation to fund Department of Defense (DOD) programs, including weapons procurement programs, in the fiscal year ending September 30, 2006. The senators are facing difficulties in reaching the goal and one possible solution would be to have the present-incomplete Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) authorization bill amended into the appropriations bill.

Lawmakers livid over botched ACS program

Article Abstract:

The Pentagon procurement policy makers are facing heavy criticism after weight problems froze acquisition of the Aerial Common Sensor (ACS), an aircraft that was to have formidable electronics payload of intelligence, surveillance and target acquisition for the Army and Navy. House lawmakers are demanding for an explanation as some legislators are predicting the ACS program may have to be cancelled or rebid.

Military contractors cheat on taxes, GAO reports

Article Abstract:

The nonpartisan General Accounting Office reported that some military contractors cheat in tax payments owed to the federal government and in most cases get way with it. Under current law, the Department of Defense (DOD) is supposed to work with the Treasury Department and its tax collector, the Internal Revenue Service to lean on contractors and push them to pay taxes.
