One method of selecting shares was developed by Benamin Graham and focuses on value measured in terms of net current assets in relation to share price. A portfolio selected for 1995 on this principle has performed well though tthis has been mainly due to the shares of one company, Asprey. Companies which qualify for inclusion in a 1996 to 1997 portfolio using this method include Independent Insurance, Mountview and Wilson Connolly. The method involves buying all the shares recommended in order to gain the benefits.

United Kingdom companies with exposure to south-east Asian markets could be affected by cuurency and stock market problems in the region. Burmah Castrol, HSBC and Standard Chartered have seen drops in their stock prices due to links with these markets. Burmah Castrol estimates that bad debts in Thailand could affect the group's profit by under 1%. Standard Chartered sees its bad debt provisions as not likely to be necessary, and BZW does not foresee problems unless Hong Kong and China are affected by the crisis.
