Direct approach

Article Abstract:

Dudley Jenkins owns databases and is benefiting from an increase in direct mail as a marketing tool, with United Kingdom spending on direct mail up by 10% in 1996. The company makes better margins from selling data that it owns than from acting as an intermediary for mailing lists from other bodies. The company also produces plastic envelopes and may sell this division to use cash for its database operations. The company's profit is forecast at 3 million pounds sterling for 1997 by Granville Davis.

MAID and Knight join forces

Article Abstract:

MAID is in talks with Knight Ridder and is seeking to acquire that company's online information business. MAID would rank among the three major information providers world wide if the deal went through. The deal would involve bringing together the two biggest databases of professional and technical information, DataStar and Dialog, and Infosort, sorting software from MAID. MAID's own database would eventually be merged with the other two.
