Dixons

Article Abstract:

Dixons has moved into providing internet connections with its Freeserve system, which was launched in September and is already the largest provider of internet access in the UK. The service is free to home users, who only pay phone charges which are billed at local rates. Dixons partner in the new service is Energis, the telecoms operator spun off by the National Grid. Shares have risen by 73% since the service was launched but internet analysts wonder whether Freeserve could compete with a major media brand with regard to content.

Alba

Article Abstract:

Alba has developed a low-cost internet TV that is easy to use and does not require hardware rental, connection or contract. The company aims to sell 750,000 sets from Jun 2000, with revenue from a JV with Virgin.net. The internet TVs will use a Bush-branded portal and advertising sales and e-commerce are likely to provide much of the revenue. The system uses in-built software, so users are unable to change their internet service provider. The JV will have initial losses, but is forecst to break even during year two.
