Dolly for dinner? Assessing commercial and regulatory trends in cloned livestock

Article Abstract:

The state of art in cloning-technologies, the present state of regulatory and trading frameworks, particularly in the European Union (EU) and U.S. and the potential for public controversy are examined. The absence of a consistent international system for the regulation and trade of the food products derived from animal cloning might hinder the animal biotech industry and also increase the likelihood of public resistance.

The emperor's new clones

Article Abstract:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Draft Risk Assessment on Animal Cloning has found no evidence for treating the products of cloned animals any differently from those of other animals. The implications of this assessment on the U.S. trade relations with Europe, where consumers are less enthusiastic about food from clones than they are about genetically engineered products, are discussed.

Risk assessment of meat and milk from cloned animals

Article Abstract:

The studies on the biochemical properties of food products from cloned and noncloned animals have not shown any differences in the measured parameters. The public acceptance of cloned animal products will depend on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval along with convincing safety data.
