Domestic reforms and regional integration: can Argentina and Uruguay increase non-MERCOSUR rice exports

Article Abstract:

Argentina and Uruguay can market their rice outside MERCOSUR (Mercado Comun del Sur) countries, including the US, provided they reduce production, milling and transportation costs to US levels via tax reduction, technological improvements and increasing mill utilization levels. Their competitiveness will likewise be bolstered if they consistently produce high-quality rice by developing irrigation and transportation infrastructures. Compliance with financing and US rice policy are the other factors influencing Argentina and Uruguay's success in the US rice market.

Changing competitiveness in world soybean markets

Article Abstract:

The soybean export market is characterized by shifting competitiveness among major producing countries. US market share declined from 95% in 1970 to 45% in 1990. Brazil's share of the market grew from 5% to 30%, while that of Argentina increased from 0 to 16% for the same period. The competitiveness of soybean-producing countries in the soybean export market is determined by the level of technology, production costs, geographical location, infrastructure, natural resources, and government regulation.
