Double entry still exists - after a fashion

Article Abstract:

Allen Computers' Integrated Accounting System (IAS) is an accounting software package that integrates a database approach with accounting procedures. The result is a package that does not simply mimic conventional bookkeeping procedures. All the accounting data is entered into one database, instead of being separated into different modules for sales and purchases ledgers. The same information can be extracted from the database for use in conventional ledgers, balance sheets, and managerial reports. IAS operates on DEC VAX computers. The entry level price for the complete system is 28,000 pounds sterling (10,000 pounds for IAS software and 18,000 for a MicroVAX II supporting two users).

A new scenario for purchase and payables software

Article Abstract:

Accountants who have adopted integrated computer software programs for accounting and inventory control are discovering that the whole of an integrated software package is greater than the sum of its parts. By integrating payment and purchasing systems into a single software programs, invoices are more likely to be sent to the proper account and in the proper amount, and any mistakes can be easily checked. Materials control is no longer a related but separate part of the ordering process, but rather an integral part of ordering. Automated payment reduces the costs of processing checks by electronically transferring funds.
