Downsizing firing line sets site on marketers

Article Abstract:

The recent popularity of corporate downsizing has left marketers most vulnerable regarding the loss of their jobs since their department is usually considered a 'non-mission critical' one. Although corporate retrenchment decreased from 1993 through 1995, the trend has picked up since Oct. 1995, with marketing getting the most brunt. However, companies which plan on doing layoffs must caution against leaving the firm's marketing thin. Many laid-off marketers have successfully shifted to consultancy which they believe has tapped their skills more.
