Companies desiring to elicit the best from their workforce ought not to rely exclusively on conventional performance evaluations. They might like to try Watsonville, CA-based Graniterock's approach to employee management. In 1987, Graniterock developed and implemented what it called the Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP) to nurture and develop talent and recognize achievement. As a result, the engineering contractor and building materials manufacturer won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 1992 and ranked in Fortune magazine's '100 Best Places to Work' annual listing in 1997, 1998 and 1999.

The do-it-yourself mentality that has become pervasive in the US continues to permeate the business world, with pared-down staffs of downsized companies frequently handling twice their workload. In some cases, this involves managing corporate incentive programs on top of other responsibilities. However, this trend has begun to reverse since 1998, with The Foresight Group consultancy reporting that 70%-80% of businesses are outsourcing their incentive programs. Companies stand to derive numerous benefits in outsourcing their incentive programs to incentive services companies.
