Driving at the right target

Article Abstract:

The McGavigan Group has integrated Total Quality Management (TQM) into its corporate culture in response to pressure from increasing costs, fiercer competition, more demanding customers and powerful suppliers. The Scotland-based group of companies decided to implement TQM after its other quality initiatives, such as quality circles and a BS5750 accreditation, showedonly limited success. Several measures were adopted to support the Group's TQM program, including the restructuring of the quality department and the creationof a Total Quality Board, Special Action Squads and Process Improvement Teams. In addition, McGavigan has introduced controls for monitoring and measuring production and has begun conducting audits of quality. The company's efforts have earned it several quality awards, including Xerox Corp Certified Supplier and Award of Excellence, General Motors Spear II, and Rolls-Ryce Motors Approved Supplier Award.

New perspective

Article Abstract:

Nigel Macdonald is the new president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS). He is advocating for the re-evaluation of the duties of accountants in light of heated discussions regarding corporate governance and audit expectation. Macdonald also encouragesaccountants to widen the scope of their roles by being involved in non-financial measurements as well. He is also pushing for a simpler and more concise audit report in order to close the audit expectation gap. He believes that the accounting professionals have to play their role in furthering the interest of the community. Their ability to perform such a goal will determine public attitude on the profession. Macdonald also upholds the ICAS principle ofcompetition, cooperation and coordination.
