Banking on profit in Germany

Article Abstract:

UBS has acquired a stake of 90% in Schroder Munchmeyer Hengst (SMH) from Lloyds TSB for 350 million German marks. SMH is geared to fund management and private banking and has a better fit with UBS, while Lloyds TSB considers it too much like an investment bank. UBS is a major player in private banking world wide and this expansion into the German market is logical. UBS also has strengths in fund management, though there has been confusion about its investment policy statements.
