Article Abstract:

Canadian companies are becoming more aware of the need for fair employee termination plans. Forward averaging is complex, but can provide considerable tax savings. Termination pay may be made to a registered pension plan (RPP). Retiring allowances can be used to increase the amount transferred to RPPs and deferred profit sharing plans. Installment payments must take into consideration the timing of constructive receipt, security, corporate deductions and interest. Installments can be funded externally under an employee benefit plan. Legal, tax and benefit help should be used to consider alternatives.
