A genetic method called the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) can be used to successfully suppress economically important pest species and involves mass production of the target pest, sterilization by irradiation release over entire regions of large numbers of sterilized insects. Genetic engineering promises to improve a technique for controlling medflies that avoids chemical insecticides.

Reconstruction of biological network can be improved by using an information theoretic algorithm called ARACNe that prunes away potentially indirect interactions. Details of the reverse engineering that elucidates the structure of a system by reasoning backwards from observations of its behavior are discussed.

Genetic engineering of an immunotoxin to eliminate pulmonary vascular leak in mice

Article Abstract:

Vascular leak syndrome is considered as a major and dose-limiting side effect of immunotoxins and cytokines. A three-dimensional structure is evaluated as immunotoxins for activity, ability to induce pulmonary vascular leak in mice, pharmacokinetics and activity in tumor-xenografted mice.
