Economic development programs compared

Article Abstract:

Nations compete for direct foreign investment by offering economic benefits such as site improvements, tax incentives, or worker training to foreign industrialists. Market research and advertising can enhance such economic development efforts. A 1984 Business Week survey of 1,000 US executive subscribers identified ten likely countries outside the US that might offer acceptable new plant sites: (1) Mexico, (2) Great Britain, (3) Ireland, (4) West Germany, (5) Japan, (6) Singapore, (7) Taiwan, (8) Brazil, (9) South Korea, and (10) France. The economic incentives offered by each of these countries are compared, as are their economic development goals and the industries they seek. Balanced regional growth and increased exports were the most common development goals. Taiwan and Ireland led the survey in the number and variety of investment incentives offered.

South America: land of opportunity?

Article Abstract:

Many US firms are discouraged from seeking new markets in South American countries such as Brazil because of negative reports of local and regional economic conditions. US companies also make erroneous generalizations and stereotypes regarding South America. The five key markets of South America are Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Venezuela. While there are some similarities between these markets, there are also significant differences in language, resources, and differences between rural and metropolitan areas in each country.
