Editor's note

Article Abstract:

The Presidential Roundtable on Design focused on the social contribution of designers and raised people's perception of the recognition and value due to a design. A US Design Council should advocate design in education, business and the public sphere. A conference will be held to focus on the formation of a US Design Council and a related federal office of design quality. Representatives from Design Councils abroad, government policy makers and professional designers may help in shaping government policy and recommending strategies for a US Design Council.

Getting to the core

Article Abstract:

The editorial desk at the I.D. magazine believes in presenting a versatile range of topics that reveal design passions and inventions, besides technology. The magazine is equally interested in presenting articles on innovative coffee cup lids and the products of Apple Computers Inc.. Apple's financial failure is not essentially due to its designs, but could be due to the failure to live up to the quality of the designs. Since most designers use Apple's Mac, Apple's financial failure attributed to designs can be regarded as blasphemy by them.

Food for thought

Article Abstract:

The influence of design is evident in the food industry. Supermarkets, for instance, boast of interior designs that enhance color, smell, temperature, light and even music to attract shoppers. Studies show that attractive designs force buyers to make unplanned purchases during their visits to supermarkets. Even the packaging of snacks has become a new design subdiscipline to make them more appealing to children.
